How to Clean Crystals
Dust off the dirt — and the stale energy
Crystals and gemstones bring so much beauty into a home, yet like everything else they do get dusty or dirty. Physically cleaning your crystal beauties can be a little tricky. With so many variations of chemical make-up, it’s best to use caution — some crystals can be badly affected by water, especially salt water.
Physical Cleaning – the safe way
Crystal specimens or raw minerals
Soft brush or blower
A camera lens blower or soft make-up brush removes dust in seconds. Perfect for selenite wands, delicate clusters, or anything labelled “no water”.
Quick rinse (only if safe)
Quartz, amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz, rose quartz — rinse 10 seconds under lukewarm tap water, pat dry at once with a microfibre cloth. No soap, no salt.
DO
- Use room-temperature water only
- Dry immediately
- Check Mohs hardness first
DON’T
- Use salt water or ocean baths
- Soak anything soft or fibrous
- Leave wet overnight
Energetic Cleansing – refresh the vibe
Metaphysical energy cleansing techniques have been derived from spiritual, traditional and cultural beliefs some stemming from thousands of years of human evolution.
Smoke
Wave through white sage or bay leaf smoke for 20–30 seconds.
Sound
Play a singing bowl, bell, or 432 Hz track nearby for 2–3 minutes.
Selenite plate
Rest any crystal on selenite for 4–6 hours — it is said to self cleans & cleans everything around it.
Earth
Place on the ground & leave for a few hours or overnight (dry soil only).
Full moon
Place on a windowsill overnight — this practice is more for charging than cleansing.
Self-cleansers
Carnelian, citrine, kyanite never need cleansing — they do the job for others.
Crystal Jewellery – extra gentle rules
Never wear crystal jewellery in the shower, pool, or ocean.
Remove before applying perfume, lotion, or hairspray.
Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth only.
Store in a soft pouch away from harder stones.
The examples above are just a start. Always double-check a new stone’s info before wetting it.
