Geology/History
Crazy Lace Agate is a unique often brightly coloured Agate that exhibits complex patterns of swirls & banding. Most lace Agates form with clean lines of parallel banding the crazy & random nature of this Agates banding structure is precisely why it has been allocated the name of Crazy Lace Agate. Most commercially available Crazy Lace Agate is found in Chihuahua, North Mexico, however has also been found other countries such as Australia in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, specimen formation here is approximately 65 million years old. This Agate typically gains its colouring from iron & aluminium giving it a wide colour range of reds, whites, yellows, greys, greens, pinks, blacks & browns.
Most Agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities originally produced by the disengagement of volatiles in the molten mass which were then filled wholly or partially by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls, from this siliceous matter crystals grow. Agate has also been known to fill veins or cracks in volcanic or altered rock underlain by granitic intrusive masses. Such Agates, when cut transversely exhibit a succession of parallel lines, giving a banded appearance to the section. Crazy Lace Agate is one of these types of Agates, others that form in this manner are known under the generic terms of Banded Agate, Lace Agate & Striped Agate. Although known of & utilised for centuries by ancient humans the current name “Agate” was given by Theophrastus a Greek Philosopher & naturalist. Somewhere between the 4th & 3rd century BC he found the stone along the shore line of the Dirillo River in Sicily an area known in ancient Greek times as Achates.
