Geology/History
Fire Quartz is a trade name applied to Quartz containing epigenetic inclusions and staining of iron oxides, primarily Hematite. It is also marketed under names such as Hematoid Quartz, Red Hematoid Quartz, Harlequin Quartz and Agnitite, whilst some material is incorrectly sold as Strawberry Quartz. Unlike true Strawberry Quartz, which contains syngenetic inclusions formed during crystal growth, the red colouration in Fire Quartz developed after the Quartz crystal had already formed. Iron-rich fluids penetrated fractures, growth planes and microscopic openings within the crystal, depositing Hematite and other iron oxides that created fiery red clouds, wisps, veils and splashes of colour suspended within the Quartz.
The intensity of colour can vary greatly, ranging from delicate pinkish hues to deep crimson red. Some specimens display spectacular internal landscapes resembling flames, smoke or flowing lava, a characteristic that inspired both the common name Fire Quartz and the trade name Agnitite. Material occurs in several localities worldwide, with notable deposits found in Madagascar, Brazil and parts of Africa. Fine specimens displaying vivid colour, strong transparency and attractive internal patterns are relatively uncommon and highly prized by collectors.
