Geology / History
Gold Sheen Obsidian is a rare variety of natural volcanic glass formed when silica rich lava cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. Like all obsidian, it is an amorphous volcanic glass classified as a mineraloid, with a smooth texture and characteristic conchoidal fracture.

During the cooling process, gases trapped within the molten lava form microscopic bubbles known as vesicles. As the lava continues to move before solidifying, these bubbles become flattened and preserved as thin internal layers within the glass. When light enters the obsidian, these layers interact with the light through reflection and interference, creating the distinctive golden sheen.

Despite its appearance, the colour is not caused by gold or metallic minerals. The golden effect is an optical phenomenon created by subtle variations in the thickness, spacing and orientation of the microscopic gas bubble layers. These internal structures influence which wavelengths of visible light are reflected most strongly, producing the warm golden appearance. The sheen can appear to shift or move as the specimen is rotated under changing light conditions.

The difference between Gold Sheen and Silver Sheen Obsidian is due to variations in these microscopic internal structures rather than differences in chemical composition. Small changes in the arrangement and spacing of the bubble layers affect how light interacts with the glass, producing either golden or silvery reflections.

Gold Sheen Obsidian is most commonly sourced from Mexico, particularly volcanic regions where the cooling conditions allowed these unusual internal structures to develop. Like other obsidian varieties, it has been used throughout human history for tools, weapons and ceremonial objects because its conchoidal fracture produces extremely sharp edges.

Metaphysical Properties
Gold Sheen Obsidian is said to combine the grounding and protective qualities traditionally associated with Obsidian while encouraging confidence, personal power and self awareness.

It is believed to assist in recognising personal strengths, overcoming self limiting beliefs and bringing hidden talents into awareness. Many practitioners believe it encourages clarity of intention and focused action when working towards personal goals.

Gold Sheen Obsidian is also said to support optimism, abundance and a positive outlook while maintaining a strong connection to grounding energy and inner stability.

Crystal Healing
Gold Sheen Obsidian is said to share the traditional healing associations of Obsidian while supporting vitality, emotional balance and energetic wellbeing.
