Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica rich lava cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. The result is an amorphous igneous rock with a smooth, glassy texture and characteristic conchoidal fracture. Although often mistaken for a mineral, obsidian is classified as a mineraloid because it lacks the ordered atomic structure required to form a true mineral.
Unlike crystalline rocks, obsidian is metastable and may slowly undergo alteration over geological time through a process known as devitrification. During this process, microscopic crystals of minerals such as quartz and feldspar may begin to form within the glass. This gradual transformation occurs over very long periods and is one reason true obsidian is relatively young compared with many crystalline rocks.
Although most obsidian is black, it can also occur in shades of grey, brown, mahogany, green and other colours depending on its composition and the presence of microscopic inclusions. Some specimens display remarkable optical effects, including Rainbow, Gold Sheen and Silver Sheen varieties. These effects are caused primarily by microscopic internal structures formed during cooling, which interact with light to produce flashes of colour or reflective sheens.
The earliest known archaeological evidence of obsidian use comes from sites such as Kariandusi in Kenya, where stone tools dating to approximately 1.5 million years ago have been discovered. Due to its conchoidal fracture, obsidian can produce an exceptionally sharp edge at a microscopic level, making it highly valued by ancient cultures for knives, spear points, arrowheads, mirrors and ceremonial objects.
Today, obsidian is found in volcanic regions around the world, with significant deposits occurring in Mexico, the United States, Iceland, Italy, Turkey, Japan and New Zealand. Mexican obsidian remains particularly important in the gemstone and collector markets due to the variety of colours and optical effects produced there.

Obsidian is said to be a powerful grounding and protective stone, traditionally associated with self reflection, transformation and uncovering hidden truths. It is believed to encourage honest awareness of thoughts, emotions and personal patterns, helping one recognise areas where growth and change may be needed. Obsidian is said to assist in releasing old attachments, emotional blockages and limiting beliefs while supporting personal transformation.
Traditionally regarded as a protective stone, Obsidian is believed to create an energetic shield that absorbs and disperses unwanted energies. It is said to encourage inner strength, resilience and courage while helping one face challenges with greater clarity.
Obsidian is also said to support spiritual exploration and connection with the Earth. Many believe it encourages grounding, meditation and deeper self awareness, making it a stone traditionally associated with personal growth and transformation.

Obsidian is said to support healthy nerve, digestive and circulatory function. It is also believed to assist with detoxification, hormonal balance, muscle cramps, joint discomfort and recovery following injury.
