Rainbow Obsidian is a rare variety of natural volcanic glass formed when silica rich lava cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. Like all obsidian, it is an amorphous volcanic glass classified as a mineraloid, with a smooth texture and characteristic conchoidal fracture.
Although Rainbow Obsidian often appears black under normal lighting, when viewed under strong directional light it reveals vibrant flashes of green, purple, gold, blue and occasionally red. These colours are not caused by coloured minerals or pigments within the stone, but by the way light interacts with microscopic internal structures preserved within the volcanic glass.
During cooling, gases trapped within the molten lava form microscopic bubbles known as vesicles. As the lava flows and cools, these bubbles become flattened into extremely thin layers within the glass. When light passes through these layers, it is reflected and interferes with itself, enhancing certain wavelengths of visible light and producing the characteristic rainbow effect.
The intensity and colour of the display depend on the thickness, spacing and arrangement of these microscopic layers. Slight differences in these structures determine which colours are visible and at what angle they appear. In some specimens, minute crystallites formed during the early stages of devitrification may also contribute to the optical effects.
Because the internal structures vary throughout each specimen, every piece of Rainbow Obsidian displays its own unique pattern of colour that appears and disappears as the stone is moved through the light. This makes each specimen visually distinctive and highly valued by collectors.
The finest Rainbow Obsidian is found in Mexico, where volcanic conditions created exceptionally developed colour effects. Like other obsidian varieties, it has been used by humans for thousands of years to create tools, weapons, ceremonial objects and decorative pieces due to its ability to fracture into extremely sharp edges.
