Geology / History
Silver Sheen Obsidian is a rare variety of natural volcanic glass formed when silica rich lava cools so rapidly that atoms are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. Like all obsidian, it is an amorphous volcanic glass classified as a mineraloid, with a smooth texture and characteristic conchoidal fracture.

During cooling, gases trapped within the molten lava form microscopic bubbles known as vesicles. As the lava continues to flow before solidifying, these bubbles become flattened and preserved as thin internal layers throughout the glass. When light strikes these layers, they reflect and interact with the incoming light, producing a bright silver sheen.

Although Gold Sheen and Silver Sheen Obsidian appear different, they are created by the same natural process. The difference in appearance is caused by subtle variations in the thickness, spacing and orientation of the microscopic gas bubble layers. These internal structures influence how light interacts with the glass, determining whether the reflected light appears as a warm golden sheen or a cooler silver sheen.

The silvery appearance is not caused by silver or metallic minerals, but by the way the internal structures reflect visible light. Under different lighting conditions and viewing angles, the sheen may appear to move across the surface of the stone, revealing the dynamic nature of this optical phenomenon.

Silver Sheen Obsidian is most commonly sourced from Mexico, where volcanic conditions created the internal structures required to produce this unusual effect. Like other obsidian varieties, it has been valued throughout history for producing sharp cutting tools, weapons, mirrors and ceremonial objects.

Metaphysical Properties
Silver Sheen Obsidian is said to combine the grounding and protective qualities traditionally associated with Obsidian while encouraging reflection, intuition and clear perception.

It is believed to assist with honest self examination, helping one recognise thoughts, emotions and personal patterns with greater objectivity. Many practitioners regard it as a stone of insight that is said to encourage calm decision making and inner wisdom.

Silver Sheen Obsidian is also said to support meditation and spiritual awareness while providing a sense of grounding and emotional balance.

Crystal Healing
Silver Sheen Obsidian is said to share the traditional healing associations of Obsidian while supporting emotional wellbeing, circulation and energetic balance.
