Strawberry Quartz is a variety of Quartz containing syngenetic inclusions that formed during crystal growth. The characteristic pink to strawberry-red appearance results from microscopic inclusions of Hematite or related iron oxide minerals becoming trapped within the Quartz as it crystallised. The inclusions in Strawberry Quartz typically occur as countless microscopic platelets, flakes and triangular to hexagonal crystals dispersed throughout the host Quartz. These highly reflective inclusions interact with light to produce a glittering appearance known as aventurescence, giving the crystal its distinctive sparkling effect and resemblance to strawberry seeds suspended within the stone. Because these inclusions formed simultaneously with the Quartz crystal itself, they are considered syngenetic and form an integral part of the crystal's original growth structure.
Under magnification, the inclusions may appear as delicate metallic-red platelets arranged along growth planes or distributed evenly throughout the crystal. This mode of formation distinguishes genuine Strawberry Quartz from Fire Quartz and other iron-stained Quartz varieties where the colour developed after crystal growth had ceased.
Important deposits have been reported from Brazil, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mexico and Madagascar, though material from different localities can vary considerably in colour, transparency and inclusion habit. Some specimens exhibit a soft translucent pink hue, whilst others display a rich raspberry-red colour with intense aventurescent sparkle. Fine quality material displaying abundant reflective inclusions and good transparency is relatively uncommon and highly sought after by collectors.
