Geology/History
Vivianite is a rare hydrated iron(II) phosphate mineral that forms as a secondary mineral under oxygen poor (reducing) conditions where iron, phosphate and water are available. It most commonly occurs in phosphate rich sedimentary deposits, bog iron ores, peat bogs, lake sediments and areas containing decaying organic matter. These environments allow dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and phosphate to combine, producing Vivianite crystals within sediments, cavities and fractures. Vivianite is an authigenic mineral, meaning it forms in place within the geological environment rather than being transported as pre-existing crystals. It commonly develops at low temperatures in reducing environments and is frequently associated with organic material, other phosphates such as variscite and wavellite, iron minerals and sulphide minerals such as pyrite.

One of Vivianite’s most fascinating occurrences is within fossil and archaeological bones. Bone is composed largely of the phosphate mineral hydroxyapatite (Ca₅(PO₄)₃OH), which can provide a local source of phosphate during burial. Under oxygen poor conditions, groundwater containing dissolved ferrous iron may circulate through porous bone, allowing Vivianite to crystallise within pores, vascular canals, fractures and cavities. In many specimens, the original fossil structure remains preserved while blue Vivianite crystals grow within the bone. This unusual association makes fossil-associated Vivianite particularly valued by collectors.

A particularly interesting Australian occurrence is found at Demons Bluff near Anglesea, Victoria, where Vivianite occurs as distinctive dark blue black nodules and concretions within Tertiary marine clays and sands of the Anglesea Sand Beds. These nodules are interpreted by some researchers as having formed within former crab burrows, where phosphate and iron rich material accumulated in a reducing environment before later crystallising as Vivianite. They are typically rounded, sometimes reaching approximately 20 cm across, and may display concentric banding or radial fibrous structures when broken. The Demons Bluff material is considered a distinctive Australian occurrence due to its unusual morphology, intense colour and association with fossilised burrow structures.

Fresh Vivianite is typically colourless, white, pale green or grey because iron is predominantly present as ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) within the crystal structure. Exposure to light and oxygen causes a gradual oxidation process in which some Fe²⁺ converts to Fe³⁺, producing changes in the mineral’s electronic structure and resulting in colours ranging from blue green and deep blue to indigo and dark green black. This colour transformation is one of Vivianite’s most distinctive characteristics in mineralogy, and freshly broken specimens may reveal pale interiors beneath darker oxidised surfaces.

Vivianite was first described in 1817 and named after John Henry Vivian (1785–1855), a Cornish mineral collector, industrialist and politician associated with early specimens from Cornwall. Although Vivianite has occasionally been used as a blue pigment, its tendency to darken upon exposure to light limited its practical use. Today it is highly prized by collectors for its intense blue colour, unusual colour change and remarkable geological associations. Major historical and collector localities include Cornwall, England, Anapa in Russia, the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea, Llallagua and Poopó in Bolivia, Minas Gerais in Brazil, as well as more recent discoveries in China and Morocco that have produced well formed blue crystals.

Vivianite is said to support emotional balance, relaxation and energetic wellbeing. It is traditionally associated with calming the mind, reducing stress and encouraging inner harmony.
